SEE the future corporate responsibility brochure
We are an ISO 14001:2004 registered company with zero environmental infringements.
Balfour Kilpatrick plays an active part on sustainability and waste task groups organised by Balfour Beatty. In Scotland, we are working closely with SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) in relation to environmental mitigation measures, including the prevention of water course pollution, at Whitelee wind farm and Elvanfoot sites.
An innovations checklist focuses minds on prefabrication and modularisation on every project, to identify opportunities for prefabrication and modularisation. Early involvement and collaboration with our supply chain can benefit the environment in terms of reduced site waste, traffic and deliveries. We have produced a DVD to promote the benefits early involvement can have for opportunities to prefabricate, and developed our own modularisation software.
A sustainability ‘Code of Conduct’ for preferred suppliers has been established to ensure their commitment. We’ve reduced our supply chain from 8,000 to 1,500 firms, with national suppliers chosen so that we align ourselves with like-minded safety, people and environmental cultures.
We have also assessed our carbon footprint and introducing a campaign to reduce the figure, and have published our first SEE the future CR report in the first quarter of 2008 which captures our achievements in 2007.
Our campaign was launched to help everyone involved with the company think about their responsibilities and how they treat others; whether colleagues in the office, or suppliers delivering to sites, or the people who use our buildings or products, and the people who employ our services.
‘SEE the future’ is the name of our initiative to tackle Social, Environment and Economic issues in a responsible way. A dedicated corporate responsibility committee, comprising members of the senior management team, has been formed which has defined a policy (published website, intranet, noticeboards) and action plan. The policy lays out the framework for the development and implementation of corporate responsibility activities across the company. Activities are reviewed at quarterly board meetings.
The key issues are health and safety performance, environmental impacts, employees and ethics, relationships with customers, suppliers and partners, and community involvement. Local charity groups and CR committees/representatives are active in each office, a monthly charity report is submitted, and charity events featured in our company magazine.
